So how do we account for the numerous verses in scripture that would seem to indicate proof of a Trinity? Well let’s examine:
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
(Genesis 1:26-27 – ESV)
And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
(Genesis 11:6-8 – ESV)
Due to the use of the word “us,” there would seem to be some sort of plurality into play here. But if we remember John telling us that the Word was with God and that it was through the Word that all things were made, then that would also include humanity as well. Now the Word did not cease to exist for God was expressed throughout the Old Testament. So the Word was with God during the building of the Tower of Babel as well.
And Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing beside him on his right hand and on his left; and the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another. Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, ‘I will entice him.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’
(1 Kings 22:19-22 – ESV)
God has a close association with angels. They surround His throne in heaven, converse with Him and carry out His will. Not to mention, there has been a biblical instance in which angels actually accompanied the Lord when they visited Abraham in the form of man. Some of you may have believed that it was the “Trinity” that visited Abraham in Mamre, but as we will find out from the Bible, this is not true.
And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth
(Genesis 18:1-2 – ESV)
So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.
(Genesis 18:22 – ESV)
The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth
(Genesis 19:1 – ESV)
I listed these 3 portions of scripture to show how the Bible interprets itself to clearly point out that Abraham welcomed the Lord and two angels, not three members of a Trinity. And this also shows how closely God and His angels work together and interact.
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
(Psalm 139:7-10 – ESV)
Would we not agree that God’s Spirit is omnipresent? He can be anywhere at any time however He wants to express Himself. This is important to realize because if we believe this, didn’t it shouldn’t be hard to believe that one God could manifest Himself in three ways simultaneously. And quite possibly He could have done this in the beginning (another possible explanation for “Us”) without becoming three different persons.
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.
(Matthew 3:16-17 – ESV)
If we are to believe that God could still be on His throne in heaven while Jesus is walking the Earth, then why is it so hard to believe that God could be in Jesus, descend on Jesus as His Spirit and also create a voice in heaven all at the same time? Does it really take God three persons to accomplish this? Not if we truly believe in an omniscient and omnipotent God.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
(Matthew 28:19 – ESV)
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
(Acts 2:38 – ESV)
There’s only one name that is meant in Matthew 28 and that name is “Jesus.” We will not find one instance in the Book of Acts where baptism took place under any other name. Some theologians believe the verse was altered at some point in history to convey a Trinitarian formula but even then, the fact that “name” is singular can only point to Jesus. And speaking of another verse thought to be inserted at some point in history:
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one
(1 John 5:7 – KJV)
This version of 1 John 5:7 is seldom found in modern versions of the Bible. But we still will tackle this verse nevertheless. Let’s note that the three that bear record in heaven are not the “Father, Son and the Holy Ghost.” It is the Father, “Word” and Holy Ghost. Not three persons, but 3 different roles that God carries out. That’s a huge difference. Now who is God bearing witness to in these three roles? Jesus Christ. Remember, it always comes back to Jesus, who is the embodiment (human form) of all of who God is (Colossians 2:9). Also take notice that in 1 John 5:7 there is no mention of “three person” but “three.”
If God cannot accomplish being Father, Son and Holy Spirit without being three persons, then how is it that we who are made in His image can? As a man, I can be both a father and a son and my spirit can influence others. Do I have to split into three persons to accomplish this? No. I am the same person functioning in all of these roles. How much more and greater can God carry out these different roles?
No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
(1 John 2:23 – ESV)
How do we know that when we come to Jesus Christ we are coming to God Himself? And how do we have the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ dwelling in us when we have the Holy Spirit? Because the Bible tells us so. Remember the scriptures are the standard that we go by and what the Holy Spirit gives witness to. If we have Jesus, we have God, not just because Jesus is The Way (humanity, sacrifice on the cross) but because Jesus is God incarnate (The Word, God manifest in the flesh).
